Council provides new footbridge for Cascades in North Adams

The new bridge

How many cities can boast of a lovely cascading brook that falls through a beautiful section of forest - all within a mile of downtown?

North Adams owns just such a treasure, the Notch Brook Cascades. The Council helped the city secure federal funding to acquire the Cascades in the 1970s, and now the Council has improved access to the falls by building a footbridge over Notch Brook.

With the blessing of Mayor John Barrett and the North Adams Conservation Commission, the Council's contractor, Peter Jensen of Great Barrington, installed the bridge in October. It wasn't the most remote job Jensen has worked on, but it was arduous nonetheless. Jensen estimated that he and his crew of three walked 19 miles in aggregate one morning hauling in timbers for the 20-foot bridge from the Marion Avenue trailhead.

North Adams native Dr. Richard Ziter provided the lead grant for the bridge, spurred by childhood memories of playing in Notch Brook. The James and Robert Hardman Fund for North Adams, a fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, also provided support, as did Betsy Taylor of Williamstown. Informal polling suggests that the new bridge beats the old crossing - a slippery log between two boulders.
