Millonzis Protect Farm & Heron Rookery
Joel and Kathleen Millonzi completed two CRs in 2004. One protects the Riiska Brook heron rookery, and across the road, the second protects an old farm called Green Acres Farm. Everywhere the landscape is changing rapidly, but the herons of Riiska Brook will always recognize their home.
Joel and Kathleen showed some traits similar to their heron neighbors. Like fishing herons they were patient and moved deliberately to complete the projects. Land conservation is a delicate dance between property rights, town revenue, and personal experience. WeÕre reminded of this project when we see a Great Blue Heron touch down, its spindly legs hopping over rocks. Successful navigation of the surrounding landscape requires preparation and thoughtful execution. In this case the outcome is balanced. Some of the land is subject to the industrious hands of human production and some is left to the industrious forces of nature. The project has left BNRC feeling like a heron with a full stomach we hope that the Millonzis are equally satisfied. |
