1,100 Acres Conserved in 2004
In one of its busiest years BNRC conserved over 1,100 acres in 2004. Some of the projects are
listed below and others are described in more detail throughout the newsletter.

image3.jpgJoel and Kathleen Millonzi completed two CRs in 2004. One protects the Riiska Brook heron rookery, and across the road, the second protects an old farm called Green Acres Farm. Everywhere the landscape is changing rapidly, but the herons of Riiska Brook will always recognize their home.

In the valley below raptors circled on columns of warm air. Overhead, clouds sailed on a summer breeze. It was a perfect August day and Jane Murdock was leading us along the summit of Tom Ball Mountain.

Don MacGillis Wins Aldo Leopold Award A double shot of good news arrived earlier this year when our friend Don MacGillis won The Wilderness Societs Aldo Leopold Award for Distinguished Editorial Writing and asked that the $1,000 prize in his name be directed to the Berkshire Natural Resources Council.

Become a BNRC steward
BNRC presently owns nearly 6,500 acres of land in Berkshire County. We need people with cameras, chainsaws and binoculars. Help us plan and maintain our trails, learn which animals are using the land, and spread the word about the importance of land conservation.

Millard H. Pryor Remembered. We note with sadness the passing of Millard H. Pryor of Richmond and West Hartford, Connecticut on March 1, 2005, at the age of 71.

Carrying on the tradition of BNRC Rice Fellows, Torben Russo and Kristin Sanzone joined BNRC in 2005 and put in a full summer of work monitoring conservation restrictions and BNRC preserve


BNRC begins volunteer steward program
Volunteers have signed on to be stewards of particular properties and are donating their time doing bimonthly monitoring of trails and conditions

Wind Power in the Berkshires
Berkshire Natural Resources Council weighs the costs and the benefits.
