Basin Pond Trail draws visitors and love letters (Basin Pond Trail)

We were thrilled to receive the following letter late last fall:

Dear friends,

Several weeks ago, I led a group on your recently established Basin Pond Trail in Lee.

We all agreed that this was one of the most beautifully designed and constructed paths we have ever experienced. The trail makes excellent advantage of the contours of the land and the natural features of the forest, guiding your eyes as well as your feet.

Please convey our appreciation to those involved in the development of this trail. The design is that of an artist, but the execution — and especially the stonework — can only be described as a labor of love. Thank you for sharing it.

Sincerely,
S.R.

Basin Pond construction

Basin Pond, with its many nooks and crannies, is as popular with kids as it is with adults. Here two young rascals prepare to ambush BNRC Chairman Walter Cliff.

Many were those who worked on this instantly popular trail — and paid for its construction. Credit for the latter goes primarily to The Geoffrey C. Hughes Foundation, The Nion Robert Thieriot Foundation, The High Meadow Foundation, and The Fields Pond Foundation.

As for the design and execution, credit goes to Peter S. Jensen & Associates, with construction help from the Student Conservation Association and Landmark Volunteers. Jensen recently started work for us on a backcountry skiing, hiking and mountain biking loop in Alford.

To reach the trail, take Route 20 east from Lee. Turn left on Becket Road across from Belden Tavern. The trailhead is approximately .25 miles ahead on left.
